Quick question to the forum. We just had bowsers belly shaved now that the heat of summer has kicked in and his belly was matting up pretty thick. Question I have is do others do yearly shaves belly or otherwise? Also we noticed that the matting started late spring when it seemed like he was shedding his winter coat. Do most people recommend a shaving every now and again, and if so when? We do brush weekly but his tummy just matts so quickly.

I would never shave a Maine Coon because it can/will damage their coat. Their coat is multilayered and is designed to keep their body temperature regulated. That said, if the matting is really bad, you may not have a choice. I do a combing/brushing almost everyday on both of our MC's. This keeps them from matting and in the end is much less work. Diet can also contribute to matting If your cats diet is mostly/all dry food. This causes chronic dehydration which can be reflected in a less healthy coat.
